Exciting progress was made on both the Quantum of the Seas and the Anthem of the Seas, the newest cruise ships from Royal Caribbean International, on August 2, 2013. The date marked simultaneous milestones for the first two Quantum-class vessels: the keel laying of the Quantum of the Seas and the initial steel cutting of the Anthem of the Seas at the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Germany.

The keel is Quantum of the Seas‘ first construction block on the way to her final assembly and launch in the fall of 2014, and the massive piece of the puzzle weighed in at 430 tons. The total ship’s size will measure in at 167,800 gross registered tons as will that of the Anthem of the Seas. Her steel cutting means the sister ship will not be far behind with her own keel laying and eventual launch in the spring of 2015. See the steel cutting of the Quantum of the Seas here.

The Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas will be revolutionary cruise ships, introducing new features to the high seas such as the North Star, a crane operated attraction that transports guests out and over the ship.
