Today Princess Cruises announced its plans to partner with triple Oscar and quadruple Grammy award-winning composer, Stephen Schwartz, to develop new production shows for the cruise line’s fleet. This marks the first time such a teaming has occurred in the cruise industry.
Schwartz is also the six time Tony-nominated composer of such hit broadway musicals as Wicked, Pippin and Godspell as well as films Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt. He now enters into a multi-year development deal to produce four new musicals for Princess Cruises.
The first such production show is called Magic to Do and, “will celebrate Schwartz’s lifelong fascination with magic,” according to Princess. The performance will feature magic acts and a number of Schwartz’s famous numbers, plus a brand new song written just for Princess Cruises, and it will debut on Crown Princess this coming fall.
“Stephen is hands down one of the most talented and accomplished Broadway composers of all time and we couldn’t be more honored to partner with him to ideate and bring fresh talent together to create memorable entertainment experiences for our guests,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises president. “Princess is known for introducing product innovations and we’re thrilled to embark on this extraordinary new live-show entertainment, unlike anything any cruise line has ever before offered.”
The 45-minute Magic to Do will highlight illusions of master magician, Jim Steinmeyer, who has worked with Doug Henning, Siegfried & Roy and David Copperfield. Schwartz’ development team includes a who’s who of Broadway talent, and Schwartz himself will participate in selecting Magic to Do‘s cast.
Princess adds, “Theater Producer Jayson Raitt will be working closely with Schwartz and consulting on the creative development of the three additional shows.”
