I make no point of hiding our genuine excitement for cruise ship construction at Popular Cruising, so seeing the majority of the Norwegian Breakaway‘s superstructure completed is a milestone for us as much as it is for Norwegian Cruise Line. On the same day – just yesterday, in fact – that the line announced its next Breakaway Plus ship build, the current namesake received her bow, marking a significant step in her birth at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. “Placing the bow is a very symbolic and momentous step in the building of Norwegian Breakaway,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “Meyer Werft is doing an incredible job of constructing our most groundbreaking ship to date in record time.” The newly installed bow section weighs an impressive 361 tons and measures 72 feet long, 101 feet wide and more than 39 feet tall.

What’s more is the block encompassing the cruise ship’s bridge was also just put into place, effectively completing the bulk of the ship’s outer form. The Norwegian Breakaway is scheduled to homeport in New York City beginning April 2013 with her sister ship, the Norwegian Getaway, to follow with service from Miami, Florida in the spring of 2014.
