CORRECTED: Viking Ocean Cruises is not the first new cruise line to launch in a decade as was originally reported.

Viking Ocean Cruises has officially launched with the christening of its first ship – the 930-guest Viking Star – in Bergen, Norway during Norwegian Constitution Day. As seen in our latest video podcast, in HD above and SD below, we were onboard to sail from London, UK to Bergen to witness the festivities attended by approximately 20,000 people.

The special day concluded with a public concert that featured Norwegian artists – violinist Charlie Siem, vocalist Sissel and comedy duo Ylvis of recent “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” fame – ahead of Trude Drevland, the mayor of Bergen, naming the appropriately Bergen-registered Viking Star and releasing a bottle of ceremonial champagne crashing upon its bow, signaling the start of a grand fireworks finale.

“We believe the arrival of Viking Star signals a new era in destination-focused cruising, and I could not be more proud that she will call my favorite city in the world ‘home,’” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises. “This is a ship that was built for exploration and designed with our Scandinavian heritage in mind, and our guests will experience it from the moment they step onboard.”
